The Inauguration of the Canada-Indonesia Parliamentary Friendship Group (CIPFG)

The signing of a Joint Communiqué by Prof. Dr. Bomer Pasaribu from the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia and The Hon. Bryon Wilfert, P.C, M.P. from the Parliament of Canada, April 27, 2009, marked the establishment of the Canada-Indonesia Parliamentary Friendship Group (CIPFG).

The signing was held in an official ceremony on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, attended by parliament members of both countries and the Ambassador of Indonesia to Canada, H.E. Djoko Hardono. The two Parliaments agreed that the bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Canada needs to be further developed in all fields, therefore the two Parliaments will actively play their role and give contribution to support and to increase the relationship and cooperation between Indonesia and Canada.

Prof. Dr. Bomer Pasaribu said that the establishment of the CIPFG is a step forward in the effort of extending the cooperation of the two Parliaments, which have been working closely in the multilateral forum such as the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU). The CIPFG could also be considered as an element of multi-track diplomacy and may contribute solutions to current global challenges, for instance the global economic crisis.

The Hon. Bryon Wilfert expressed his appreciation in the founding of the CIPFG and expects that the group will deliver concrete achievement in the future.

In his speech at the reception held at the Embassy of Indonesia, that same day in the evening, the Ambassador of Indonesia to Canada hoped the CIPFG will be one of the main players in promoting a strengthened cooperation between Indonesia and Canada. Thus, the CIPFG needed to focus its activities in one or two strategic areas that will lead to concrete results.

As a souvenir, the Delegation from the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia gave a replica of the CN 235 plane, a product of PT Dirgantara Indonesia, to the Hon. Bryon Wilfert. The reception also presented some Indonesian traditional dances such as ”Gending Sriwijaya”, ”Cindai”, and an orchestra of kolintang and angklung played by the Indonesian youth in Ottawa.
