Press Release: Indonesia-Canada Bilateral Consultative Forum

Indonesia and Canada agreed to revive the Human Rights Dialogue and the Interfaith Dialogue, that have been delayed. This is one of the agreements resulting from the Indonesia-Canada Bilateral Consultative Forum, Ottawa, 6 May, 2011.

The Indonesian delegation was led by the Director General of America and European Affairs, H.E. Retno Marsudi, accompanied by the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Canada, H.E. Dienne H. Moehario. The Canadian delegation was led by Mr. Peter McGovern, Chief of Trade Commission & Assistant Deputy Minister (Asia), Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) Canada.

Apart from reviving the two dialogues, Indonesia and Canada also agreed that the Bilateral Consultative Forum will be held annually. Considering the importance of economic potential of both countries, there will be a meeting for the Working Group on Economic, Trade and Investment.

Trade between Indonesia and Canada in 2010 reached USD1,84 billion. Canada ranked 14th as the biggest investorĀ in Indonesia. On investments, both delegations agreed on continuing the 10th Round of Negotiation of FIPPA (Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement) in July 2011.

Indonesia and Canada agreed on processing an MoU on the Cooperation of Trans-National Crime (TNC), including Counter-Terrorism and an MoU on Defence Cooperation, including Peace Keeping Operations.

Indonesia and Canada will commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations in 2012 and Canada indicated that there is a possibility of the visit of the Prime Minister of Canada to Indonesia.
