Three projects in Jambi to be included in MP3EI

Coordinating Economic Minister Hatta Rajasa suggested on Monday that three development projects run by the Jambi provincial administration should be included in the Master Plan for the Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesia’s Economic Development (MP3EI).

According to Hatta, if the projects were included in the MP3EI, the development costs would be funded by the state budget and be prioritized as a result.

“The projects comprise the construction of a seaport in East Jambi, the expansion of Sultan Thaha Airport and improvements to road infrastructure,” Hatta Rajasa said in Jambi as quoted by Antara news agency.

The MP3EI is a government program that is expected to trigger growth in Indonesia resulting, in the long run, in the country becoming one of the world’s top-five economies by 2025.

Under the program, Sumatra is one of six corridors for infrastructure development across the archipelago. The other five are Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali–Nusa Tenggara and Papua–Maluku.

Aside from the expansion of Sultan Taha Airport to become an international airport, the Jambi administration is being urged to speed up the construction of a seaport in Tanjung Jabung Timur regency. This port is expected to become a gateway for East Sumatra’s economic development.

“Partnerships with the private sector are being worked out [...] and funds for the construction projects have been partly disbursed, including for land acquisition,” Hatta said. (rkh)
