Indonesia-Myanmar-Vietnam Festival 2014: A Celebration Of Multiculturalism In Ottawa

Visitors were enjoying the "Indonesia-Myanmar-Vietnam Festival 2014"

The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Ottawa attracted more than 680 visitors as it hosted the a�?Indonesia-Myanmar-Vietnam Festival 2014a�? on 14 June 2014. The event was specially organized to introduce Canadians to Indonesia, Myanmar and Vietnamese Cultures, consisting of cuisine, handicrafts, cultural performances and traditional music. The Festival also provided tourism information. For the Indonesian, Myanmar and Vietnamese Community in Ottawa, the Festival was seized as a way to lessen their homesickness. H.E. Dienne H. Moehario, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Canada; H.E. U Hau Do Suan, Ambassador of Myanmar to Canada and Spouse, Daw Nwe Nwe Aye; and H.E. To Anh Dung, Ambassador of Vietnam to Canada and Spouse, Tran Phi Nga, cut a ribbon to open the Festival, witnessed by Mr. Eric Gerardo E. Tamayo, Charge da��Affaires of the Embassy of the Philippines in Ottawa and Spouse, Mary Joyce Furbeyre Tamayo as well as the visitors of the Festival.

The Visitors were indulged with tasty South East Asia cuisine from Indonesia, Myanmar and Vietnam. Among the delicacies were: Indonesia (fish cake (pempek), grilled chicken, leave-wrapped spicy anchovy and shredded coconut (buntil), meatball soup, chicken satay, Indonesian vegetable salad (gado-gado), pickled vegetables, pickled fruit and various Indonesian cakes; Myanmar (fish soup (Mohinga); and Vietnam (spring roll and fried rice). The Indonesian, Myanmar and Vietnamese communities in Ottawa, the Indonesian Student Association of Canada (PERMIKA) and a�?Gado-Gadoa�?, a Montreal based Indonesian restaurant participated as vendors.

Marilyn and Yudwike, the Pendet Dancers, who performed at the a�?Indonesia-Myanmar and Vietnam Festival 2014a�?

The Cultural performance from Indonesia highlighted 2 (two) of the most popular line dances Sajojo and Poco-Poco; also the Jaipong Dance (West Java), Saman Dance (Aceh) and Pendet Dance (Bali) were highly enjoyed by the visitors. The Giring-Giring Dance (Central Kalimantan), and an Angklung ensemble from the Indonesian-Canadian Congress (ICC), the Rantak Dance (West Sumatera) and a Javanese Gamelan performance were also presented. Indonesia took the opportunity to showcase Indonesian Batik, a world cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO, and Songket garments (from different islands in Indonesia). The event was an effort to increase the visit of Canadian tourists to Indonesia and to emphasize that Indonesia is proud of its multicultural identity. (SM/Indonesian Embassy in Ottawa)
