Govt establishes regional design center

The government is setting up a regional design center to improve the quality of products for export.

The center, slated to open at the end of this year, will offer a design database and guidance free of charge to exporters of furniture, handicrafts, fashion and textiles, according to the Trade Ministry’s director general for national export development, Nus Nuzulia Ishak.

“Design is one of the ways to boost the competitiveness of our products. The empowerment of designers and exporters will help in the development of these products,” Nus said on Wednesday.

The design center is an extension of the Design Dispatch Services, which the ministry established built with the cooperation of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The program offers, among other things, designs for furniture-makers in Cirebon, West Java, and helps in the promotion of their products overseas through trade shows.
