S. Sumatra to develop more hotels for Asian Games

The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association’s (PHRI) South Sumatra branch says the province will build 3,000 new hotel rooms over the next few years in a bid to accommodate the 2018 Asian Games.

“We now only have 7,000 rooms available from hostel to star-rated hotels across the province. For an international event like the Asian Games, this figure is not enough to accommodate the participants and guests of the sports event,” PHRI South Sumatra chairman Herlan Aspiudin said in Palembang on Wednesday as quoted by Antara news agency.

Herlan said that both established and new players in the hotel industry were developing new properties in order to provide more rooms in the province.

He also said his institution was helping the players obtain permits from the provincial government quickly as they were racing with time.

“There are 10 investors that will develop new hotels, from three star to upscale this year. Three of them recently started developing their properties,” he explained.

The demand for accommodation in Palembang and its surrounding cities has been increasing over the past few years as more domestic and international events have been held in South Sumatra.

The province is predicted to continue enjoying growth in its hospitality industry over the next five years as it an investment destination and is emerging as a tourist destination, he added.
