700 international CEOs to gather in Jakarta

Some 700 CEOs from around the globe and six world leaders will gather in Jakarta during the upcoming World Economic Forum on East Asia (WEF-EA), an official said on Friday.

“Indonesia should make it an opportunity to attract foreign investment,” said the Trade Ministry’s director general for international trade cooperation, Bachrul Chairi, referring to the 24th WEF-EA scheduled for April 19-21.

Leaders of Cambodia, Mali and Ethiopia and vice presidents of Russia, Vietnam and Tanzania, as well as some 25 state ministers and eight leaders of international organizations, would also attend the annual forum, Bachrul said. “[Our] 16 officials will explain Indonesian policies and business opportunities for investors,” he added.

This is the second time Indonesia has received the honor of hosting such an event, being held under the theme “Anchoring Trust in East Asia’s New Regionalism” and set to be attended by CEOs from Australia, Cambodia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Netherlands, China, the Philippines, South Korea, Russia, Singapore, Switzerland, Sweden, Thailand, the UK and the US.

Bachrul said that the Indonesian government had allocated US$129 billion for development but still needed some $425 billion to $430 billion. “This is the event to sell our programs and opportunities to the CEOs,” he said as quoted by Antara news agency.

Indonesia hosted the annual forum for the first time in 2011.
