Indonesia eyes another big jump on World Bank flagship index

The Trade Ministry launched on Friday a new online registration platform that will help speed up the issuance of business permits in another coordinated effort from the government to improve the country’s ease of doing business.

After climbing 15 notches to secure the 91st ranking on the World Bank’s latest ease-of-doing-business index, Indonesia is eager to make more improvements in various economic sectors to reach the 40th position by 2019.

“If our position [on the index] increases by 15 notches annually, it won’t be enough for us to reach the 40th position [by 2019]. We must jump by more than 15 notches [annually],” Coordinating Economic Minister Darmin Nasution said during the launch.

The online registration platform is also equipped with a digital signature facility that allows applicants to submit required documents without an obligation to show up in-person.

For the initial stage, the platform will fully facilitate online registration for 51 out of 134 licenses under the ministry’s authority.

The World Bank said the significant jump in Indonesia’s ranking was based on improvements made in starting a business, getting electricity, registering property, getting credit, paying taxes, trading across borders and enforcing contracts. (hwa)
