S. Sulawesi Could Drive Eastern Indonesia’s Economy: Jokowi

TEMPO.COJakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi said that South Sulawesi has the capability to drive economic growth in the Sulawesi Island and eastern Indonesia.

“In 2016, South Sulawesi’s economic growth stood at 7.4 percent, the figure was above the national average in economic growth and almost half or around 49.6 percent of Sulawesi’s economy,” President Jokowi said today in a limited meeting on national strategic and priority projects in South Sulawesi.

According to President Jokowi, South Sulawesi can be a hub that connects regions in eastern Indonesia.

“I’m confident that South Sulawesi can grow faster if it focuses on developing agriculture, fishery, processing and trade sectors,” President Jokowi noted.

President Jokowi revealed that agriculture, forestry and fishery sectors made up 23.29 percent of South Sulawesi’s economy.

President Jokowi expects more attention to be paid to the agriculture sector due to its potential in creating jobs and improving prosperity, particularly of farmers.

In a bid to boost the agriculture sector, President Jokowi has instructed acceleration of supporting infrastructure development, such as dams and irrigation system.

At the meeting, Jokowi received the progress reports of the so-called Makassar New Port.

The limited meeting was also attended by Vice President Jusuf Kalla and Working Cabinet ministers.
