BPS predicts higher inflation in July

Indonesia's official statistics bureau (BPS) expects inflation to accelerate in July from last month due to the start of the new school year.

The beginning of the new school year in July usually pushes up prices of books and other education-related items.

"The prices of basic food stuffs such as rice, however, were stable in July," Choiril Maksum, who heads the bureau, told reporters Tuesday.

Choiril didn't say exactly how fast the bureau expects inflation to be rising in July.

The official July inflation data are due Aug. 2.

In June, inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index, rose 0.46% on month and 6.83% on year.

The government predicts full-year inflation to reach 7%.

Inflationary pressures have been building since April due to higher telephone charges, more expensive liquefied petroleum gas, which is widely used for cooking, and the rupiah's fall against the dollar. (*)
