COORDINATING MINISTER FOR ECONOMIC AFFAIRS:
INDONESIA'S ECONOMY SHOULD BE ABLE TO SUSTAIN RECOVERY DESPITE TERRORIST
BOMBING
Jakarta, 6 August 2003 - The Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs,
Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti, is confident that Indonesia's economy will be
able to show it's resilience against the impact of terrorism. Widespread
condemnations by groups of people and communities from all over Indonesia
against the terrorists' cowardly act are the strong foundation for the
Government and security forces' commitment to cracking down on terrorism.
The Minister comment came a day after the terrorist bombing at the front
of J.W. Mariott Hotel in Jakarta. Minister Kuntjoro-Jakti also stated:
"The terrorist bombing once again had caused human tragedy in Indonesia
that killed many Indonesians and other nationals. It is a fact that
terrorist acts take place in Indonesia as in many other countries.
However, it is also a fact that Indonesia's security forces had been able
to move swiftly and decisively in bringing perpetrators of the previous
cases to justice. There is no doubt that the security forces will be able
to do it again."
The Coordinating Minister then referred to the experience happened
immediately after the terrorist bombing in Bali last October. He then
explained: "The economic recovery following the bombing in Bali happened
much faster than forecasted which shown the resilience of the economy. The
impact of the bombing on the economy must not be larger than what has
already taken place. It is therefore, I would like to make an appeal to
analysts, academicians and media not to exaggerate the impact of the
bombing in such a way that creates a misperception which in turn scare
away businessmen and investors. This is the time when we need to show
solidarity and cooperation. In this difficult time, I would like to convey
my condolences and deep sympathy to the family of the victims, and pray
for the recovery of the survivors."
The Minister also added: "Let us work together to minimize the impact of
the bombing on the economy and continue with the reform process. Let us
show the world that our nation, together with ASEAN and other countries,
will win the fight against terrorism. We have been successful in
overcoming the impact of the bombing in Bali, and now we will do it again.
The economy's fundamentals are strong and intact, and we continue to
implement the reform programs. The barbaric act at the Jakarta Mariott
Hotel should give us more reason to strengthen our commitment toward
reforms in the effort to establish a New Indonesia. There is only one way
to fight against terrorism. That is: to win it!"
