Indonesia expects to achieve budget surplus in 2005
|
JAKARTA (AFP): Indonesia is
expected to post a budget surplus in 2005 amid an improving fiscal
situation, top economy minister Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti said Wednesday.
"I do not think at this moment there is a debate on the ability of Indonesia to reach the target surplus by 2005," he told a regional investment forum. The government has projected a budget deficit of 1.0 percent of gross domestic product in 2004, with a 1.8 percent deficit target this year. Kuntjoro-Jakti said fiscal policy is on track to achieve this year's target. He said monetary policy remains firmly geared toward supporting the downward trend in inflation and maintaining exchange rate stability. Inflation reached its lowest level in three years in June, rising 6.62 percent year-on-year. Kuntjoro-Jakti said the government is seeking to boost receipts, including by widening the taxpayer base. A decree issued last week
authorises financial authorities to detain errant taxpayers without trial.
