Economy top priority for new government

JAKARTA (AFP): Tackling economic problems should be the top priority of Indonesia's incoming government under Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, according to an independent survey released Tuesday.

The survey by the Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI) showed most of 1,200 people questioned across the country in October viewed that the economy was the most important issue in the government's first 100 days in office.

"Economic problems were the most important and frequently stated issue for Indonesian voters," the LSI said in a statement.

Yudhoyono will be sworn in as the country's first directly-elected president on October 20 after he won a presidential election run-off on September 20, defeating incumbent President Megawati Soekarnoputri by a large margin.

The survey also showed that the public had in general a high level of confidence in the incoming government's ability to overcome the principal hurdles it would face.

"Generally, the public strongly believed that the SBY-Kalla government can overcome various economic, political and law problems facing the country," the LSI said, referring to Yudhoyono by his initials and his running mate Yusuf Kalla. (*)
