Government sets growth at 5% next year

JAKARTA (JP): President Megawati Soekarnoputri will submit the draft budget for 2004 to the House of Representatives on August 15, with the economic growth target of five percent.

"President Megawati will deliver the opening speech for the draft budget and in it you will see that next year our target is five percent," Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs DorodjatunKuntjoro-Jakti told reporters on Tuesday.

Dorodjatun said he expected a continued rise in GDP growth in the next few years, with Indonesia regaining a rate of seven percent by 2006 or 2007.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Monday was upbeat that Indonesia could still achieve this year's growth target of between 3.5 percent and 4 percent despite the recent blast at the JW Marriot Hotel.
