PARTIES BILL ENACTED INTO LAW

The Jakarta Post - January 29, 2008

SURABAYA (Antara): President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has enacted the bill on political parties into law, which Home Minister Mardiyanto said was intended to build ethics and political culture and eliminate rifts within parties.

The law stipulates political parties are responsible for political education to promote ethics and recruit candidates for executive posts, Mardiyanto said in introducing the law.

"The new law is expected to encourage political parties to consolidate, the result of which will be political ethics that uphold etiquette and sportsmanship and eliminate internal conflicts," Mardiyanto said.

Under the new law, a party must set up offices in 60 percent of the provinces across the country, with at least 30 percent of the executive seats allocated for women.
