ACEH AND NIAS ONE YEAR AFTER THE TSUNAMI
The Recovery Effort and Way Forward

The Indonesian Embassy Tsunami Relief Fund, set up to collect generous donations from the people of Canada in the wake of the December 2004 earthquake and Tsunami waves that struck the provinces of Aceh and North Sumatra, Indonesia, is officially closed as of July 7, 2005.

The Embassy of Indonesia is forever grateful for the outpouring of sympathy and generosity from the people of Canada, and wishes to communicate the following.

The Relief Fund has collected C$ 101,559.17 and US$ 990.00. These amounts have been transferred to the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Social Fund and the Indonesian Red Cross. To this date the funds collected have been and will be used for the following projects :

  1. Assistance to187 Acehnese Tsunami orphans being housed at the As Syafi’ah Orphanage, Pondok Gede, Jakarta.
  2. Reconstruction of 92 houses, construction of two mosques, one primary education facility and one clean water facility in the region of Blangpidie, Province of Aceh.
  3. Scholarships for two university students at Faculty of Economics, University of Syah Kuala, Banda Aceh and Dental Faculty, University of Indonesia, Jakarta.
  4. First phase assistance -- 578 reference books for the Faculty of Law Library, University of Syah Kuala, Banda Aceh.
  5. Construction plan for a polytechnic college in Banda Aceh.
